Building on an initial footprint of six cities (Lake Charles, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Memphis, Nashville and Greensboro/Winston Salem), Xspedius Communications grew enormously in August of 2002 with the purchase of e.spire Communications. In January of 2003, Xspedius purchased the Texas assets of Mpower Communications, and in April of 2005, the company purchased the business and assets of ICG Communications in five markets across the Southeast. Xspedius states that it is continuing to pursue similar acquisitions in order to grow its southern-centric asset base.

The company's IP/MPLS core network, based on solutions from Lucent and Juniper Networks, now covers more than 3,500 total route miles of fiber. The network is built to handle increasing bandwidth demands and higher speeds in support of both existing and new data services, including VoIP. According to the company, its Lucent and Juniper multi-service network solution enables Xspedius to converge IP, ATM and Frame Relay Services on an MPLS core with the same quality of service as an ATM core network.

Xspedius offers a wide range of solutions for small to medium sized enterprises and service providers, including local and long distance voice as well as data and dedicated Internet access, in 46 facilities-based markets located in 20 states and the District of Columbia. Connectivity solutions are available from DS1 to OC-192. Xspedius also owns, operates and manages extensive metropolitan fiber optic networks with significant transmission capacity.
