Recent statistics released by the NPD Group show that four manufacturers shared most of the U.S. dialup modem market in 2002. The four manufacturers, U.S. Robotics, Creative Labs, Zoom Telephonics, and Best Data products had 73 percent of the market by number of units, and 81 percent of the market by value.

Strikingly, U.S. Robotics was the clear leader, with 26 percent of unit sales, but a dominant 39 percent of the market by value. This data suggests that U.S. Robotics modems are the most popular, and that they are sold at a premium over their competitors, reflecting some combination of brand name loyalty and technological advantage.

Overall, NPD claims that 2,475,837 modems were sold last year, at a total dollar value of $102,406,523. That's an average of just over $41 per modem.
