ISP Broadens e-Business Base

Asia On-line’s New Zealand operation is increasingly viewing itself as part of an Asia-Pacific communications network offering its clients a range of internet-based business solutions.

Asia On-line's New Zealand operation is increasingly viewing itself as part of an Asia-Pacific communications network offering its clients a range of internet-based business solutions.

The internet service provider formerly known as Iconz invested $1 million into gearing up its local network during the first three months of this year and is currently bringing together the cornerstones of its future business. Managing director Hugh McKellar says there are now five prongs to the business: access, web design, e-commerce, hosting, and systems integration, all focussed on e-business.

Engine of growth
For the past year, Asia On-line has been in acquisition mode, taking a controlling interest in a number of Australian firms. These include web design and graphics house Diesel, Canberra-based ISP Interact (which has a lot of government clients) and Sydney-based ISPs Flex and Morse.

There's also an agreement locally to work with Exonet for their ERP solutions.

And there's an applications service provider (ASP) product currently being trialled in Hong Kong and Australia which enables Microsoft Office to be rented on a monthly basis is likely to be offered in new Zealand in the near future.

Numbers are bigger than they appear
Mr McKellar admits subscribers are less than 30,000 but doesn't want to play the numbers game. "Kohanga Reo, for example, has 700 connections but we give them one invoice. We have thousands of customers using our new pre-paid offering with Vodafone but we only bill one customer and that's Vodafone."

He says between 50-80 per cent of customers are businesses. Asia On-line offers virtual private networks (VPNs), JetStream fast Internet, Walker wireless' wireless fast internet solution, and access to its own wireless network in Wellington. "We don't see ourselves as a network provider; rather as a reseller into the access market."
