Audiopoint, a Fairfax, Va.-based speech applications company developing products for businesses that reach consumer markets, has signed deals with regional Internet service providers Shentel and CIS Internet that will give those ISPs' subscribers telephone access to e-mail.

Using advanced speech technology, Audiopoint's E-mail by Phone leverages the personal information management capabilities of Audiopoint's Voice Terminal product suite. An online interface allows users to register and begin retrieving previously unread e-mail and listen to their messages through text-to-speech technology. Users may then respond to messages by sending a personally recorded .WAV audio file attachment.

Audiopoint is aggressively marketing Voice Terminal to ISPs and businesses to enable them to broaden revenue streams by rolling out a variety of new services and voice enable services for their business. According to Jupiter Media Metrix, enhanced e-mail tops the list of services consumers would pay for.

"ISPs and telcos are discovering the true value of Voice Terminal as a quick and easy way to grow revenue from their existing subscriber base, as well as attract new customers," said Lock Dethero, VP of business development of Audiopoint.

Shentel subscribers may sign up for the service in fourth quarter by using most major credit cards. CIS Internet consumer subscribers may sign up for the unlimited service for $6 per month and business customers for $8 per month.

Audiopoint plans to offer additional Voice Terminal service features including security via voice authentication later in the year.

Audiopoint has been developing and hosting large-scale commercial voice applications since 1999 for customers that include EarthLink, PatriotNet, and Primary Network. Products built on Audiopoint's scalable 4.0 platform include the Voice Terminal contact management suite, voice print security, and VAD.
