With the completion of its 56K V.92 standard interoperability-testing program, U.S. Robotics announced this week that it has achieved V.92 interoperability with network equipment suppliers.

The new analog modem standard enables quicker connection times, faster upload speeds and seamless call handling, significantly improving users' Internet experiences—and add-on sales for equipment manufacturers like Cisco Systems, Texas Instruments and CommWorks, a 3COM company.

George Christensen, Cisco Systems vice president and general manager of its remote access business unit, said confirming interoperability is an important step in ensuring analog modem users will have a quality experience with the new V.92 standard.

"We expect that cooperative testing with U.S. Robotics will lead to a smooth and rapid transition to the V.92 standard."

With the new standard in place modem users can complete faster upstream transport with upload speeds reaching 48,000 bits per second, as opposed to V.90 upstream speeds that are limited to 31,200 BPS.

In order for a user to experience the V.92 features, both the user's computer and server it dials into, either an Internet Service Provider or remote access server, must be equipped with V.92 modem technology.

The V.92 modem standard was ratified by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in November 2000. Companies such as Cisco Systems, CommWorks and Texas Instruments outfit ISPs and remote access providers with server modems and are expected to incorporate V.92 technology this year.

V.92 products are expected to begin shipping by the end of the first quarter, V.92 white papers are availble for ISP operators now.
