How You Can Help Rescue Effort

The New York Blood Center reported that more than 4,000 people responded to the call for donations within the first day of the rescue effort. But the need continues. Following are a list of places where you can help, in the DC and New York areas, and elsewhere.

Red Cross national hotline for blood donations: 1-800-GIVE LIFE or 1-800-448-3543. To make a donational to the Red Cross relief efforts: 1-800 HELP-NOW or 1-800-435-7669; or RedCross.Org. In the Washington DC area, you can donate blood at these locations. Extended hours are planned throughout the week.

  • Rockville Donor Center in the Saratoga Building on Parklawn Drive;
  • Fairfax Donor Center on Old Lee Highway;
  • Red Cross Center on Honeygo Blvd. in White Marsh.;
  • Red Cross Center on Little Patuxent Parkway in Columbia, MD.;
  • Red Cross Center on York Road in Towson, MD;

The New York Blood Center is reporting a special need for donors of Type O and Rh negative blood types. For information in the New York City area, call 1-800-933-2566. You can visit the NY Blood Center Website or go to one of the following sites.

  • Manhattan: 310 E 67th Street, Citicorp Center at 53rd & Lexington Avenue, the American Red Cross Building at 150 Amsterdam Avenue at 66th Street, New York Presbyterian Hospital/Cornell Campus at 68th Street and 1st Avenue, and Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in Washington Heights.
  • Brooklyn: 120 Lawrence Street from 9AM-9PM and the Sunrise Adult Day Healthcare Center at 9517 Avenue "J" from 11AM-4:30PM.
  • Staten Island: 1625 Forest Avenue from 9AM-9PM and the Seaview Hospital Rehabilitation Center at 460 Brielle Avenue from 9AM-7PM.
  • Long Island: Hofstra University Arena in Hempstead from 8AM-6PM, the Huntington Hilton on Route 110 from 8AM-6PM; and donation centers located at 3125 Veterans Highway in Bohemia from 8AM-8PM and 333 Merrick Road in Rockville Center from 8:30AM-2PM.
  • Bronx: Fordham University.
  • Rockland County: the Palisades Mall beginning at 9AM
  • Westchester County: 525 Executive Boulevard in Elmsford beginning at 7:30AM.
  • New Jersey: 167 New Street in New Brunswick from 7AM-8:30PM, the Ethicon Wellness Center on Route 22 West in Somerville from 7AM-5PM, at Metlife in Convent Station from 7:30AM-1PM and the University of Medicine & Dentistry in Newark from 4-9PM.

The United Way of New York and the New York Community Trust have established a fund to help the victims of the attacks and their families. The September Eleventh Fund will provide immediate support to established emergency assistance agencies. Anyone wishing to contribute may send their donations in care of United Way, 2 Park Ave, New York, New York, 10016 or call: 212-251-4035. Donations are also being accepted on United Way of New York City's Web site

Salvation Army will accept financial contributions through 1-800-SAL-ARMY or 1-800-725-2769.
