Primus Launches Toronto Data Center The data center, measuring 7,500 square feet, is a full service center but is relatively small "in keeping with the trend noted by The Gartner Group to serving more customers through smaller data centers."
Primus Canada Inc., Canada's second largest alternative communications carrier and wholly-owned subsidiary of U.S.-based Primus Telecommunications Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: PRTL), is launching an expanded, full service data center in the downtown Toronto core to serve its managed hosting, shared, co-location and data/Internet customers. The 7,500-square-foot facility will include HVAC temperature control, anti-static floors, triple redundant backbone and fully redundant on-site power supply for uninterrupted service in the event of power outages. "With our first full service data center for Canada, we have responded to customer demand for a technologically advanced, reliable and stable environment to support their data and Internet requirements," said Ted Chislett, president and chief operating officer of Primus Canada. Security features at the center include an alarm system, controlled 24x7 access, biometric security system and complete video camera surveillance. In addition, colocation services and equipment are contained in a separate area with supervised customer access by appointment only. The center serves customers through its 50 gigabits per second capacity Internet protocol backplane routing and switching center. The servers connect with Primus's 46 points of presence across Canada, and to over 45 Internet peering and transit interconnects on Primus's global broadband Internet/data network. "This facility is very much in keeping with the trend noted by The Gartner Group to serving more customers through smaller data centers," added Chislett. "At the same time, our data center is designed to support a comprehensive suite of data products, which complement our market leading voice services. Primus Canada's communications solutions and the networks that support them are scaleable and integrated on a global level, giving customers lots of room to grow while improving the quality of service." Primus Telecommunications Canada currently has more than 700,000 retail customers. It has over 80,000 Internet subscribers accessing 46 national points-of-presence across Canada. Primus Canada also offers local services to businesses, bundling them with its long distance and Internet services. Primus Canada has offices across Canada and employs almost 1,000 people. End
