P2P is LEGAL Reader says that file trading is legalISP-Planet should not suggest otherwise. [Response to Control P2P Traffic from April 28, 2003.]
Dear Editors: This letter is in reference to the article by Alex Goldman pertaining to the software program that tracks the usage of P2P programs. Mr. Goldman incorrectly stated that the filesharing programs that the software identifies are "illegal". As of this moment, there have been NO court rulings that state that ANY of these programs are illegal. In fact, a recent court decision (see "Judge Rules In Favor of File-Swapping Sites") cleared Kazaa AND Grokster of any liability for illegal filetrading. This ruling took place THREE DAYS before this article was published. Perhaps your reporters and editors might want to do a little bit more research before posting grossly negligent materials and articles. People that are not like me and don't keep up to date on this issue are very likely to take YOUR word on the fact that these programs are illegal. Do you subscribe to the MPAA/RIAA spin that all filetrading programs are evil and illegal? Are you their puppet? In conclusion, I would like to take an opportunity to explain a little about myself, in a hope that you don't brand me as some wacked out movie pirate. I believe that trading of copyrighted materials such as movies, music and software are wrong and rightfully illegal. Anyone who is caught doing this deserves the lawful punishment that is doled out, including me. Please edit the aforementioned article or take it down. Either way, I insist you stop this debauchery and tell people the truth. Sincerely,
|
