While still in it's early evolutionary stages, the Broadband Wireless sector continues moving towards being a viable and meaningful alternative for end-users. To help our clients understand and monitor this fast-changing sector, New Paradigm Resources Group, Inc. (NPRG) has add another track under its Continuous Information & Advisory Services (CIAS). This newest track covering the Broadband Wireless Sector.

First, let's define this sector to create the proper context. We receive a fair number of inquiries asking for us to develop definitions for the various wireless sub-sectors. For purposes of our current analysis, we define "Broadband Wireless" providers as carriers using spectrum in the 6 GHz range and below to deliver wireless voice and data services.

Second, below are a few brief findings from our most recent research on the Broadband Wireless sector:

  • Market penetration increased to 15.5 percent in 2007, up from 14.5 percent in 2006. Broadband wireless providers continue to increase their market penetration rates by targeting geo-market tiers rather than customer tiers.

  • 50 percent of covered providers have been involved in merger and acquisition activity in the past five years. From small local players to large national providers, the broadband wireless industry is showing signs of consolidation, with existing carriers emerging stronger with deeper resources.

  • 20 percent of broadband wireless providers offer wireless VoIP in all market tiers.

  • Broadband wireless providers are holding their ground in the increasingly competitive telecommunications marketplace.

BBW providers are expanding their service offerings. NPRG expects the number of broadband wireless companies offering wireless VoIP to continue to rise.
