Sun Cobalt RaQ XTR The Linux-based combined hardware and software platform for service providers is the Sun Cobalt solution for rich media and high-capacity webhosting.
Sun's Cobalt RaQ XTR (Cobalt was acquired by Sun in December of 2000) is a Linux-based server offering a combination of software and hardware features targeted specifically to service providers. On the hardware side, the box ships with a 733 or 933 MHz processor and up to 4 front removable 30GB hard drives, with support for RAID 0, 1 or 5 for disk redundancy and improved performance. For software, the Linux-based system includes both hosting and development tools needed by service providers, including the Apache Web Server; support for both 128bit SSL and Secure Shell (SSH) connections; programming languages and interfaces including PHP4, Perl, tcl/tk, Python, Chili!Soft ASP and CGI; database functionality from InterBase; and support for both standard E-Mail services and browser based Cobalt WebMail for each domain. The device is configured via a Web based interface that can be operated in "System," "Site," or "User" mode, and can be delivered to support both dedicated and virtual hosting. Other highlights of the server include automatic, one-click DNS configuration and a "Super Admin" feature allowing providers to access dedicated servers even if the hosting client has changed the system administration password on the box.
