Module Enables ADSL over ISDN Lines

Lucent Technologies adds new capabilities to its Stinger DSL platform.

Lucent Technologies this week introduced new capabilities for Stinger, the company's digital subscriber line (DSL) access concentrator. The enhancement, an ADSL-over-ISDN interface module, will let service providers provide high-speed, integrated ADSL (asymmetric DSL) services over the existing ISDN infrastructure.

Stinger's ADSL-over-ISDN module supports up to 24 ports—up to 336 ports per Stinger chassis—and uses the ITU standard G.992.1 Annex B for ADSL on ISDN lines. Service providers can take advantage of the enhancements to offer end users voice-and-data services, as well as fast Internet access, at speeds, according to the company, of up to 8 Mbps. All of this simultaneously over existing ISDN lines.

Service-class capability
Stinger is Lucent's integrated DSL platform that incorporates a high-speed ATM switching fabric, and gives service providers end-to-end QoS capabilities. With bandwidth management and priority policing capabilities, Stinger lets service providers offer differentiated classes of service to customers. Stinger's multi-service platform provides support for all versions of DSL: SDSL, ADSL (full-rate and G.Lite), IDSL and HDSL2.

"The ADSL-over-ISDN module strengthens Lucent's position in the DSL space, especially in the European market where there is a large deployment of ISDN lines and DSL services are rapidly gaining momentum," says Ashok Dhawan, general manager, xDSL, InterNetworking Systems, Lucent Technologies. "This interface module will clearly make Stinger the platform of choice for service providers that want to offer high-speed ADSL services over POTS and ISDN lines."

The module is available now.
