IPv6 Firewall Built In To Smart IP Access Routers

Making its debut at Networld Interop 2001 in Paris, 6WIND showed off one of the first commercial IPv6 firewalls to be fully integrated into an IPv6 migration router, the 6WINDGate 6200 Series.

6WIND's IPv6 firewall completes the range of advanced features built into its 6WINDGate 6200 Series, for both IPv4 and IPv6 environments. These enhancements include Quality of Service (QoS) Management, IPSec, IKE, and Mobility, among others. This puts the product in a unique position as the first complete IPv4/IPv6 access equipment, and confirms the company's key role in promoting migration towards IPv6 standards.

Patrick Cocquet, 6WIND chief executive officer and Vice President of the IPv6 Forum, said its gear is staying out in front of rival equipment.

"As the main need of Network Managers today is to create a new range of added value IP services and to prepare the migration to IPv6, we provide with the 6WINDGate the right answer, with the right timing," Cocquet said. "By integrating the first commercial IPv6 firewall into the 6WINDGate, our product keeps well ahead of competition."

6WIND 6000 RouterThe 6WINDGate gear (left), which was first brought to market in March, has become popular among Internet service provider's seeking to leverage IPv6 standards. If ISPs are going to offer new, predominantly mobile services, one of the first pieces of equipment they'll require is a router that enables efficient transitioning from IPv4 to IPv6 standards.

The 6WINDGate equipment has raised a lot of interest in IPv6 deployment around the world. The timeline for the migration to IPv6 is getting clear in Europe and Asia, where first IPv6 commercial services are already running. These markets are forecasted for massive deployment over the next two years, according to research analysts.

"Today's demand for IPv6 equipment is driven by companies that intend to leverage this technology to give birth to what we call the Mobile-Multimedia-Everywhere Internet, and initiate a carefully considered migration path. The IPv6 adopters are reviewing the new opportunities offered by our products in terms of new revenues", explains Pierre Langlois, 6WIND Vice President of Marketing and Sales.

Availability and pricing
The 6200 Series includes the 6211 model with 3 Fast Ethernet interfaces, 6221 with 2 Fast Ethernet interfaces and a serial interface for E1/T1, and the 6231 model with 2 Fast Ethernet interfaces and an ATM 155 Mbps interface. All three units are available to ship now, but pricing is not publicly available at this time.
