Technology Promises to Extend ADSL

June 20, 2000 -- Symmetricom recently unveiled a product that it says will revolutionize the ADSL marketplace. This new product promises to solve the biggest shortcoming associated with ADSL technology: the fact that performance drops off significantly at distances of about 13,000 to 14,000 feet from the central office (CO) - and does not work at all at distances of more than 18,000 feet from the CO.

The company claims that its new GoLong extender uses Symmetricom's proprietary network extension technology to allow ADSL providers to effectively double the distance to which they can offer ADSL service. The GoLong solution uses a patent-pending, repeater-like device deployed in the long loop that should provide the additional boost the ADSL signal needs to extend ADSL's range - without compromising spectral compatibility. The product uses industry standard repeater housings and is powered using line power. Commercial availability is scheduled for the first half of next year.
